Hindustan Zinc Limited, India’s largest and the world’s second-largest integrated zinc producer, announced energy savings exceeding 0.8 million Gigajoules (GJ) during FY24. This achievement equates to powering approximately 70,000 Indian households for a year. The company also revealed plans to expand its renewable energy capacity to 530 MW following recent board approvals, aiming to meet over 70% of its power requirements through renewables by 2026.

Hindustan Zinc has already signed agreements for sourcing 450 MW of round-the-clock renewable power, advancing its commitment to sustainable and responsible manufacturing. Key energy-efficiency initiatives include turbine upgrades at captive power plants, enhanced cellhouse efficiency, installation of variable frequency drives, and transitioning from diesel to piped natural gas, reducing energy consumption and lowering carbon emissions across operations.

Recognized as the world’s most sustainable company in the metals and mining sector by S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment 2023, Hindustan Zinc continues its efforts to achieve Net Zero emissions by 2050 or earlier. The company’s focus includes decarbonizing operations through increased renewable energy, optimizing resource use, and adopting cleaner fuels and electric vehicles. Earlier this year, Hindustan Zinc utilized renewable power to produce Asia’s first low-carbon green zinc, EcoZen.

The company has significantly reduced its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions intensity by 14% in FY24 compared to the 2020 baseline, even as production volumes increased. This progress aligns with its Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) goals, supporting the 1.5°C global warming threshold.

Chairperson Priya Agarwal Hebbar highlighted, “At Hindustan Zinc, sustainability and business success go hand in hand. Our progress in renewable energy capacity expansion and ESG initiatives underscores our commitment to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050. By embracing innovative technologies and renewable energy, we aim to create long-term value for stakeholders and contribute to global climate goals.”

In observance of National Energy Conservation Day, Hindustan Zinc implemented a “No Vehicle Day” across its units, encouraging employees and partners to use public transport, cycle, or walk to reduce carbon emissions. The company also organized energy conservation awareness campaigns, including Earth Hour, training sessions, and employee engagement activities.

A Vedanta Group company, Hindustan Zinc holds a 75% share in India’s primary zinc market and supplies to over 40 countries. Its flagship product, EcoZen, produced using renewable energy, boasts a carbon footprint 75% lower than the global average. Hindustan Zinc is also certified as 2.41 times water-positive and remains a leader in critical metals essential for the global energy transition.
