Hindustan Power has received formal approval to develop a 120 megawatt-hour (MWh) Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Bihar. The Letter of Intent (LoI) was issued by Bihar State Power Generation Company Ltd under a tariff-based competitive bidding process.
The energy storage system will be built under the BOOT model—Build, Own, Operate, and Transfer. According to the company, the project will be spread across three key grid substations: Bhagalpur, Udakishanganj, and Sitamarhi, with 40 MWh capacity at each site.
The project is scheduled to be fully operational within 18 months from the effective date of the Battery Energy Storage Purchase Agreement (BESPA). This initiative is part of a broader plan supported by the central government to install 500 MWh of battery storage capacity across Bihar. The aim is to improve power reliability, manage demand fluctuations, and ensure better quality electricity supply during peak periods.
Hindustan Power, founded by Ratul Puri, said the project highlights the company’s focus on energy innovation and its role in advancing cleaner power solutions. “This marks an important step in Bihar’s energy transition and supports the state’s efforts to improve grid stability using sustainable technology,” said Mr Puri, Chairman of Hindustan Power.
The installation of advanced battery systems is expected to help balance the grid more efficiently, particularly during times of high demand, contributing to the state’s long-term renewable energy goals. Hindustan Power has been at the forefront of India’s renewable energy sector, and this new 425MWp solar project further solidifies its position in the rapidly growing solar market. With this win, the company continues to play a pivotal role in India’s transition to cleaner, greener energy solutions. As one of India’s leading integrated power generation companies, Hindustan Power remains committed to sustainability and innovation, contributing significantly to the nation’s energy transformation.
