Hindmetal Exploration Services Pvt Ltd (HESPL), a fully owned subsidiary of Hindustan Zinc Limited, has become the first Indian firm to introduce advanced Electromagnetic (EM) technology for mineral exploration. This new approach combines the use of surface-level SQUID sensors and borehole EM tools to detect hidden mineral deposits with higher accuracy and depth.
The borehole EM technology enables mapping of conductive ore bodies, such as sulfide-rich deposits, offering detailed insights into their shape and electrical properties. SQUID sensors—deployed at the surface—are especially effective in capturing weak electromagnetic signals, making them ideal for tracing low-conductivity or deeply buried targets. This development marks a significant step forward in India’s mineral discovery capabilities.
In addition to EM technology, Hindmetal is deploying drone-based surveys using LiDAR and hyperspectral imaging for high-resolution mapping. The company is also focused on greenfield exploration, using a mix of satellite imagery, geological data, and geochemical inputs. These datasets are analyzed with the help of artificial intelligence and machine learning models, helping identify promising mineral zones in previously unexplored regions.
Arun Misra, CEO of Hindustan Zinc, said, “The future of mineral exploration lies in combining advanced science with intelligent technology. At Hindustan Zinc, we are reshaping the way resources are located—by promoting digital innovation, building skilled teams, and collaborating with technology innovators. Hindmetal’s breakthroughs not only mark progress in exploration but also strengthen India’s self-reliance in critical mineral supply.”
