Hindalco Industries, the metals arm of the Aditya Birla Group and one of the world’s leading aluminium producers, has completed the delivery of 10,000 aluminium battery enclosures to Mahindra for its upcoming electric SUVs—BE 6 and XEV 9e. The announcement coincides with the inauguration of Hindalco’s new EV component manufacturing plant in Chakan, Pune, a key automotive hub.

The facility represents Hindalco’s entry into EV parts manufacturing and was developed with a ₹500 crore investment. Spread across five acres, the plant is focused on producing lightweight and crash-resistant aluminium battery enclosures and has an annual production capacity of 80,000 units, with plans to double it to 160,000. Currently, over 3,000 Mahindra EVs fitted with these battery enclosures are already on Indian roads.

Satish Pai, Managing Director of Hindalco Industries, said, “This Chakan plant marks a shift towards localized, high-performance aluminium solutions for the EV sector. Our partnership with Mahindra reflects our shared vision for cleaner mobility and reinforces India’s transition to electric vehicles.”

Rajesh Jejurikar, Executive Director and CEO of Mahindra & Mahindra’s Auto and Farm Sector, added, “Partnering with Hindalco has enabled us to develop advanced battery enclosures that improve safety, efficiency, and range. These solutions will be key to shaping the future of mobility in India.”

The co-developed battery enclosures are made using low-carbon aluminium and offer up to 40% weight savings over conventional steel-based options. This reduction translates into an 8–10% increase in driving range, better crash resistance, and improved thermal management for battery systems.

Beyond technical innovation, the new Chakan plant supports the ‘Make in India’ initiative, aiming to reduce reliance on imports and create up to 1,000 jobs. A notable highlight is the facility’s nearly all-women machine operator workforce—an uncommon but progressive step in the manufacturing space.

Looking ahead, Hindalco plans to offer similar aluminium-based components to other domestic and global vehicle manufacturers. The company’s future product range will include not just battery enclosures, but structural and safety-critical parts for both electric and conventional vehicles.

As India’s electric vehicle ecosystem expands, the demand for battery-grade aluminium is set to rise with the growth of giga-factories and local cell production. Hindalco’s investment in this space reflects a forward-looking approach to meeting the evolving needs of the mobility sector.

Hindalco Industries is the flagship metals company of the Aditya Birla Group, with operations spanning bauxite mining, aluminium smelting, copper refining, and downstream manufacturing. Alongside its global subsidiary Novelis, Hindalco is the world leader in flat rolled aluminium products and the largest aluminium recycler globally. The company has 52 manufacturing facilities across 10 countries and has consistently ranked as the most sustainable aluminium producer in the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices for five consecutive years.
