Himadri Speciality Chemical Ltd has entered into a technology licensing agreement with Australian firm Sicona Battery Technologies to bring next-generation silicon-carbon (SiCx) anode technology to India. The collaboration aims to localize and commercialize this advanced battery material, enhancing the country’s role in the global clean-tech and battery manufacturing landscape.

The agreement grants Himadri exclusive rights to use, adapt, and market Sicona’s SiCx anode materials in India. These materials, which combine silicon and carbon, can be blended with traditional graphite to achieve up to 20% higher energy density and 40% faster charging compared to current lithium-ion battery technologies. This is particularly relevant for electric vehicles and energy storage applications. The partnership supports global efforts to diversify battery production and build resilient supply chains. It also aligns with India’s broader goals of becoming a leader in next-generation battery materials.

Anurag Choudhary, Chairman and CEO of Himadri, emphasized that this alliance combines Sicona’s innovation with Himadri’s manufacturing capabilities to serve both domestic and global markets. Sicona CEO Christiaan Jordaan highlighted Himadri’s industrial expertise as a key driver in bringing SiCx to commercial scale.

The agreement includes full technical support from Sicona to ensure successful local production and quality control. Sicona Battery Technologies is an Australian innovator specializing in next-generation battery materials. Headquartered in Wollongong, New South Wales, Sicona develops silicon-carbon composite anode materials—branded as SiCx®—that significantly enhance the performance of lithium-ion batteries. By leveraging abundant and cost-effective silicon metal, Sicona’s technology delivers up to a 50% increase in energy density and reduces charging times by over 40% compared to traditional graphite-only anodes. This advancement is particularly impactful for electric vehicles (EVs), offering longer range and faster charging capabilities.
