Hilscher Gesellschaft für Systemautomation mbH has launched a new application aimed at simplifying IT and OT integration. This tool enables efficient collection and transfer of data from Modbus networks to IIoT platforms. The netFIELD app functions as a Modbus-to-MQTT converter, supporting both Modbus RTU and Modbus TCP protocols. Packaged as a software container, it translates Modbus communications into MQTT messages, easing the connection between Modbus devices and MQTT-enabled applications.

Because it is platform-independent, the app can be installed on devices such as edge gateways to facilitate data exchange between Modbus RTU or TCP servers and user applications over an MQTT message bus. Users can easily upload JSON-formatted Modbus device description files through the app’s interface. These files specify the device parameters, including register and coil settings, which are used to configure data reading and writing transactions.

This solution is well-suited for modernizing Modbus systems with IIoT capabilities and smart services. By capturing field and control data from Modbus devices, it allows real-time monitoring of physical processes. This can improve reaction times for predictive maintenance and boost overall system efficiency through timely data-driven decisions.

The Modbus protocol is commonly used in the energy sector, where it connects equipment in power generation, energy storage, distribution, and building automation. With netFIELD’s new Modbus app, organizations can retrofit existing infrastructure to support energy monitoring and management applications more quickly and effectively.

Additionally, the app features a proxy capability that bridges Modbus RTU devices with Modbus TCP clients. In this role, it converts Modbus TCP requests into Modbus RTU protocol, enabling Modbus RTU hardware to integrate with systems that only accept Modbus TCP communications.
