Hero MotoCorp Investigates Hybrid Technology for Two-Wheelers in India

Hero MotoCorp is considering the integration of hybrid powertrains into its future two-wheeler models as the automotive industry increasingly shifts towards cleaner and more sustainable powertrain options. While electric vehicles have been gaining traction, hybrid technology is emerging as a viable alternative, offering enhanced fuel efficiency and reduced emissions. Hero MotoCorp is actively researching hybrid technology for its upcoming two-wheelers, acknowledging the growing demand for alternative power solutions. Hybrid systems, which combine a conventional internal combustion engine with an electric motor and battery, are still relatively new in India’s two-wheeler market. This technology could provide consumers with better fuel efficiency and lower emissions.

Niranjan Gupta, CEO of Hero MotoCorp, highlighted the importance of offering diverse powertrain options, including internal combustion engines (ICE), electric vehicles (EV), and hybrids. The company is also exploring flex-fuel and ethanol-based technologies as part of its long-term strategy. Gupta emphasized the industry’s focus on cleaner energy and Hero MotoCorp’s commitment to leading these innovations.

Currently, Yamaha Motors is the only company offering a hybrid two-wheeler in India, with its Fascino 125cc scooter that features hybrid technology. Royal Enfield is also reportedly working on hybrid models, suggesting a broader industry interest in this technology.

Hybrid technology, while more common in passenger cars, is gaining attention in the two-wheeler segment. Government incentives, such as Uttar Pradesh’s recent road tax exemption for strong hybrids, are supporting this trend. The launch of CNG-powered two-wheelers by companies like Bajaj Auto and TVS Motor further indicates the industry’s interest in alternative powertrains beyond electric vehicles.

Alongside its hybrid technology exploration, Hero MotoCorp is expanding its electric vehicle lineup under the Vida brand, planning to increase its portfolio from two to four electric scooters this year. The new models will target both the affordable and mid-segment markets, showcasing the company’s strategy to diversify its offerings in the rapidly expanding EV sector.
