Hero MotoCorp and Zero Motorcycles have formed a partnership, set to introduce an electric platform. The collaboration aims to produce four distinct electric motorcycle models, with an initial launch expected in 2025.
Hero MotoCorp is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of two-wheelers, with its headquarters based in New Delhi, India. Established in 1984, the company has played an important role in shaping the Indian two-wheeler market and has a strong global presence. Hero MotoCorp is known for producing a diverse range of motorcycles and scooters, catering to various segments and customer preferences.
Zero Motorcycles perfectly combines traditional elements with technology. Crafting lightweight, efficient, and exhilarating electric bikes since 2006, each model features the Z-Force® electric powertrain and a specially designed aluminum frame for minimal weight. Born from a garage idea in Santa Cruz, Zero has rapidly become a globally recognized motorcycle brand, offering riders the chance to experience innovation on the road.
Electric motorcycles have become a central point for manufacturers worldwide, with partnerships emerging to accelerate development and sharping manufacturing capabilities. Notably, KTM and Bajaj have cultivated a lasting partnership, set to yield electric innovations. Zero Motorcycles, has also sealed a deal with India’s Hero MotoCorp, signalling a strategic move into the expanding Indian market.
While partnerships often begin with distribution agreements, the Hero MotoCorp-Zero Motorcycles plans for the joint development of a new electric platform. According to reports from Hero MotoCorp’s Investor Interaction on January 23, 2024, the collaborative effort is set to create at least four diverse motorcycle models. The approach is structured in two phases, beginning with the release of two high-performance models sharing core technology but having sharp body styles. Furthermore, the collaboration will introduce mid-tier electric motorcycles, featuring the same powertrain but tailored for beginner riders.
Hero MotoCorp, already familiar with electric powertrains through its Vida sub-brand, now plans creating bikes with technology and performance similar to Zero Motorcycles, yet with a more accessible price point. The collaboration starts with Hero securing a $60-million investment in March 2023, boosting the development of this platform.
It’s essential to note that in the context of the Indian market, the term “high-performance” carries a different feeling than in the US and Europe. Motorcycles with engines superior than 200cc and outputs exceeding 25 horsepower are considered high-performance in India, a definition different from Western standards. Despite this difference, Hero and Zero’s collaboration promises excitement, even if the most “high-performance” models may not match the intensity of Zero’s current lineup.
Hero MotoCorp’s focus for expanding its electric offerings are obvious. While the current market only features the Vida V1 scooter, Hero’s presentation outlines an line-up of models set for launch. These cover mid-tier offerings, mid-premium models, and premium and high-performance variants, reflecting the company’s commitment to cater to diverse preferences. The presentation hints at the development of an electric mini-bike in the mid-tier segment, alongside off-road and street-focused models in the performance and premium categories.
As Hero MotoCorp’s electric portfolio evolves, it is also set to face competition from existing players in the market. The Ultraviolette F77, a popular electric motorcycle in India, is considered a performance-oriented machine despite its moderate power output of 36 horsepower. Hero’s entry into the electric motorcycle arena is expected to energize competition, offering consumers choices in the growing electric segment.
