Henkel India, in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Navi Mumbai – Joy of Giving and with support from the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC), has advanced its environmental restoration efforts through Project HARMONY—a circular reuse initiative that converts religious waste into meaningful community infrastructure.
As part of the initiative, materials collected after Ganesh Visarjan 2025 at Nerul were diverted from landfills and water bodies and processed at an authorised recycling facility, with on-ground coordination by NMMC. More than 1,000 kilograms of Plaster of Paris (PoP) waste was recycled to produce 300 study tables for students at an NMMC school in Digha, supporting education while reducing environmental harm.
Launched in 2024, Henkel and Rotary: Mother Nature & You, known as Project HARMONY, is Henkel India’s flagship environmental CSR programme. The initiative brings together corporate expertise, civic bodies, sustainability partners, and employee volunteers to deliver measurable social and ecological outcomes.
Commenting on the initiative, S Sunil Kumar, Country President – Henkel India, said, “Project HARMONY exemplifies how sustainability can create tangible community value. Repurposing PoP idols into school furniture addresses urban waste challenges through a circular and inclusive approach.”
The project was executed in collaboration with Dr Binish Desai, founder of NuoTerra, through Pushpam and NuoTerra’s proprietary PoP recycling technology. Collection efforts were supported by Beach Please India through its volunteer network led by Malhar Kalambe. The recycled material was converted into learning furniture through Pushpam’s women-led manufacturing model, under NuoTerra’s quality and process supervision.
Dr Binish Desai, Founder – NuoTerra, said, “When innovation meets intent, even idol immersion can generate long-term social value. Responsible recycling ensures that devotion continues to serve society.” The distribution ceremony was held on January 22, 2026, at Rajarshi Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj Vidyalaya, Rabale, coinciding with Ganesh Jayanti—symbolizing the transformation of faith into purpose-driven educational support.
Harsh Makol, District Governor 2025–26, Rotary International District 3142, added, “This initiative highlights how collaboration between civic authorities, corporates, and social organisations can address environmental challenges while creating lasting community benefits.”
