Rushikesh Patel, the Heath Minister and Spokesperson for the Gujarat State Government, has recently expressed strong optimism about Gujarat being selected by Tesla for the establishment of a manufacturing facility. He has further mentioned ongoing communications between the government and the company regarding this potential development.

Tesla, founded in 2003 by Elon Musk, revolutionizes transportation with electric vehicles (EVs) and sustainable energy solutions. Renowned for its cutting-edge innovation, Tesla produces EVs, including the Model S, Model 3, Model X, and Model Y, integrating advanced technology and autonomous driving features. Beyond automobiles, the company focuses on solar and energy storage products, like the Powerwall and Solar Roof, aiming to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy while maintaining a significant global impact.

Mr Patel has radiated positivity as he engaged with journalists, providing insights into the outcomes of the weekly cabinet meeting held on Wednesday evening. When questioned about the potential arrival of Tesla in Gujarat, Patel expressed, “Gujarat is very optimistic about Tesla. Gujarat is the first destination (in India) in the mind of Elon Musk ji (co-founder of Tesla). It seems that Gujarat was in his (Musk’s) mind when they surveyed the entire India. And perhaps, an announcement in that regard may be made shortly.” “Let us hope that they (Musk and Tesla) come to Gujarat for the development of the state on the lines of Tata, Ford, and Suzuki. If they come, we welcome them,” he further said. Mr Patel has mentioned that there is ongoing communication with Tesla, and this could be the cause for the publication of such news regarding the company’s plans to establish a factory in the state.

Following a meeting between Tesla Inc.’s CEO, Elon Musk, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New York last June, Musk announced intentions to visit India in 2024. This declaration sparked significant speculation within Gujarat’s state apparatus, known as the home state of PM Narendra Modi and a prominent automotive center housing major manufacturers. There was anticipation that Gujarat might emerge as the primary choice for Tesla to establish its inaugural electric vehicle manufacturing facility in the nation.

In September, S J Haider, the ACS of the industries and mines department, revealed ongoing discussions between the Centre and Tesla regarding the establishment of a manufacturing facility in India. Specifically, Gujarat plans to initiate contact with the company at a strategic juncture. Leading up to the imminent Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit 2024, considerable speculation suggests active efforts by the Indian government to attract Tesla to set up its manufacturing hub in the state. Anticipation within the state administration is high, with prospects of an official announcement expected during the event, which will be graced by the Prime Minister.
