Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd (GRSE) has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Reintjes GmbH, a Germany-based company specializing in marine propulsion gearboxes. The collaboration aims to integrate Reintjes’ advanced gearbox systems into vessels built by GRSE, enhancing propulsion systems for both defence and commercial applications.

Reintjes GmbH brings decades of experience in designing and manufacturing high-performance marine gear systems. Through this partnership, GRSE plans to leverage this expertise to strengthen propulsion efficiency across its future shipbuilding projects. The gearboxes will be paired with select engines on vessels under construction, streamlining integration and performance outcomes.

GRSE, a Defence Public Sector Undertaking under the Ministry of Defence, has been a key player in Indian shipbuilding since its early days as a repair workshop in 1884. Taken over by the Government of India in 1960, GRSE became the first shipyard in independent India to deliver a warship, the INS Ajay, to the Indian Navy. It has also delivered several ships to friendly foreign nations, including the CGS Barracuda for Mauritius and patrol vessels for Seychelles and Guyana.

Today, GRSE operates with four separate shipbuilding units, a unique infrastructure advantage among Indian shipbuilders. The shipyard has delivered over 800 vessels, including 112 warships, making it the country’s leading warship manufacturer by volume. Its product portfolio ranges from frigates and corvettes to tankers, patrol vessels, and survey ships. GRSE is also active in manufacturing marine engines, deck machinery, and prefabricated steel bridges.

Over the years, GRSE has received multiple awards, including the Raksha Mantri Award in 2022 for designing the Indian Navy’s quietest anti-submarine warfare ship. It was also recognized for its design contributions to the CGS Barracuda. The shipyard continues to upgrade its infrastructure and currently has the capacity to build 28 ships simultaneously. Backed by a skilled design team and digital tools like virtual reality labs, GRSE continues its focus on innovation and quality in shipbuilding.
