Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd, a key defence PSU, delivered the survey vessel INS Nirdeshak to the Indian Navy on Tuesday. This marks the second in a series of four survey vessels being built by GRSE, with the first vessel, INS Sandhayak, delivered 10 months earlier in December 2023.

At 110 meters long, INS Nirdeshak is among the largest survey ships ever built in India for the Navy. It will assist in maritime surveys, collecting critical oceanographic and geographical data necessary for naval operations.

These vessels, part of the Sandhayak-class, bolster India’s maritime capabilities by supporting the mapping of sea limits and other defence-related tasks. The ships are designed to carry a helicopter and can also engage in low-intensity combat or serve as hospital ships if required.

“We are proud to deliver INS Nirdeshak just 10 months after the first in this series,” said Cmde P R Hari (Retd), Chairman and Managing Director of GRSE. He emphasized the high indigenous content in these ships, aligning with the government’s push for self-reliance in defence production.

GRSE is currently building 17 more ships for the Indian Navy, including three P-17A advanced frigates, eight anti-submarine warfare shallow water crafts, and four next-generation offshore patrol vessels. Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd. (GRSE) is a premier shipbuilding company in India, headquartered in Kolkata.

Established in 1884, it is one of the leading defense public sector undertakings under the Ministry of Defence. GRSE has a long-standing reputation for building a wide range of naval and commercial vessels, including warships, patrol vessels, and corvettes, for the Indian Navy and Coast Guard.

The company is also involved in the design and construction of engineering products and services for various industries. Known for its state-of-the-art infrastructure and expertise in shipbuilding, GRSE plays a vital role in strengthening India’s maritime defense capabilities. Its commitment to innovation and indigenization aligns with the country’s goal of self-reliance in defense manufacturing under the ‘Make in India’ initiative.
