Greaves Electric Mobility, a leading manufacturer of electric two- and three-wheelers, has announced plans to establish an in-house battery pack assembly line at its Ranipet facility in Tamil Nadu by FY 2027. This initiative aligns with the company’s strategy to improve cost efficiency, supply chain reliability, and product quality.
The Bengaluru-based electric mobility arm of Greaves Cotton Ltd produces Ampere-branded electric two-wheelers and both electric and internal combustion engine (ICE) three-wheelers under the Ele, Greaves, and Electra brands. Currently, the company relies on external suppliers for its assembled battery packs, which represent a significant portion of its production costs—33% for Ampere two-wheelers and 54% for electric three-wheelers.
The new assembly line, scheduled to commence operations in July 2026 after its commissioning in May 2026, will have an annual production capacity of 400,000 units. Greaves Electric plans to allocate ₹82.9 crore from its proposed ₹1,000 crore initial public offering (IPO) proceeds to fund this project.
In its Draft Red Herring Prospectus (DRHP), the company emphasized the long-term goal of backward integration to achieve greater autonomy in its supply chain. This move also includes a transition to Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) batteries, which offer higher thermal resistance and longer life.
Greaves Electric is actively exploring innovative battery technologies and formulations to reduce costs, enhance charging efficiency, and improve overall performance. It has identified 13 potential suppliers across South-East Asia, China, and India for battery cells, which will be the raw material for its assembly line, though no definitive agreements have been finalized.
The Ranipet facility is one of the company’s three manufacturing units and currently produces Ampere electric two-wheelers with an annual capacity of 480,000 units. Additionally, Greaves Electric plans to invest ₹375.3 crore from its IPO proceeds to advance product and technology development at its Bengaluru technology center, reinforcing its commitment to innovation and sustainable mobility solutions.
Greaves Electric Mobility, a subsidiary of Greaves Cotton Limited, is a leading player in India’s electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem, driving the transition towards sustainable and eco-friendly transportation.
