Tarun Mehta, CEO of Ather Energy, stated that government policy support is essential for the complete electrification of India’s transport sector. In a social media post, Mehta highlighted the significant growth potential of the electric two-wheeler (E2W) industry and stressed that 100% electrification is crucial to reduce fossil fuel dependence and emissions. He noted that the industry is transforming rapidly, but customer adoption is still low, at 5-6%.

Mehta emphasized that subsidies are vital to accelerate industry-wide adoption, leading to more infrastructure, research, and development. He praised the government’s supportive EV policies, which have made EVs more affordable and allowed startups to invest in innovation.

Mehta also mentioned that the revised FAME policy reduced maximum benefits per vehicle, enabling wider support for E2W transition. He argued that complete electrification, alongside renewable energy sources like solar and wind, is essential for reducing emissions.

Promoting local production helps create a self-sustaining industry and boosts India’s position as a global EV leader. Rival Ola Electric CEO Bhavish Aggarwal also supported electrification, noting that EVs will soon be cheaper than traditional vehicles, and companies not embracing EVs are making a strategic error.
