Google is set to explore partnerships with the Tamil Nadu government to manufacture its Pixel 8 smartphones and develop AI initiatives aimed at boosting the state’s industrial ecosystem and skill development programs.
In a significant move, Google signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin at Google’s Mountain View headquarters in California. The event, attended by senior Google officials, including Google Cloud Vice-President Amit Zavery and Tamil Nadu’s Industries Minister TRB Rajaa, marks a new chapter in the tech giant’s collaboration with the Indian state.
The MoU outlines Google’s plan to work closely with Guidance, the state government’s investment promotion agency, to establish a robust AI ecosystem in Tamil Nadu. This collaboration will focus on providing access to advanced technologies and resources, enabling businesses, individuals, and government entities to harness AI for inclusive growth.
One of the key areas of exploration under this agreement is the manufacturing of Google’s Pixel 8 smartphones in Tamil Nadu. The company confirmed that production of the “Made in India” Pixel 8 devices is already underway through local partnerships in the state.
The company also plans to collaborate with the Tamil Nadu government to upskill the state’s workforce with AI capabilities, particularly through initiatives linked to the ‘Naan Mudhalvan’ program. This scheme aims to prepare the youth of Tamil Nadu with future-ready skills, driving innovation in sectors like startups, mobility, and healthcare.
Industries Minister TRB Rajaa expressed optimism about the collaboration, stating, “We are excited to work with it on advanced manufacturing, including the Pixel 8 phone being produced in Tamil Nadu. The MoU will explore key AI initiatives under the Tamil Nadu AI labs.”
It’s involvement in Tamil Nadu’s startup ecosystem will include offering mentorship and networking opportunities with Google experts and industry leaders, further strengthening the state’s position in AI and technology innovation.
Amit Zavery highlighted the importance of this partnership, saying, “We are thrilled to partner with the Tamil Nadu government on their journey towards an AI-powered future. This collaboration underscores our shared commitment to fostering inclusive growth and technological progress through AI.”
The partnership also includes plans to leverage Google Cloud’s AI capabilities within the open networks marketplace, aiming to streamline access, automate processes, and enhance decision-making through technological adoption.
