Each year, the award celebrates products and concepts that demonstrate creativity, functionality and innovation. The 2026 edition received more than 10,000 entries from 68 countries, evaluated by an independent jury of 129 global experts in design and sustainability.
Goldmedal’s ROOTS Modular Lighting System stood out for its nature-inspired concept and its integration of interactive environmental technology. The design draws inspiration from the structure and function of natural root systems, which play a vital role in sustaining plant life and connecting ecosystems beneath the surface.
The lighting system extends outward in a modular configuration resembling a branching network of roots. This structure allows the installation to adapt easily to different architectural environments and interior layouts. Designers and architects can create customized lighting arrangements that complement the character of each space while maintaining a cohesive visual identity.
A defining feature of the ROOTS system is its responsive interaction with the surrounding environment. The lighting installation dynamically reacts to indoor air quality levels, providing a subtle visual indicator of environmental conditions.
When air quality improves, the system gently expands upward, symbolizing growth and vitality. When air quality levels decline, the structure contracts slightly, reflecting environmental stress. Through this movement, the lighting system transforms from a static fixture into a responsive installation that visually communicates environmental changes while maintaining an aesthetic presence. By integrating environmental sensing with modular lighting architecture, the ROOTS concept aims to encourage healthier indoor environments while creating a stronger connection between people, technology and natural design principles.
