ABB India reinforces its commitment to the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ program by expanding its manufacturing facilities for energy-efficient drives at the Peenya factory in Bengaluru. It aims to double production capacity by 2025 and promote local manufacturing to meet domestic and global demands.
ABB India, a leading technology provider in electrification and automation, has announced the expansion of its manufacturing facilities for energy-efficient drives at the Peenya factory in Bengaluru. This expansion aligns with the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ program, aimed at strengthening local manufacturing capabilities to meet domestic and global demands. The new production line will focus on variable-speed drive modules, offering a range of drives from 75 kW up to 250 kW to cater to various industrial segments.
ABB’s variable speed drives are essential in controlling the speed of electric motors, optimizing energy efficiency, and enhancing performance across industrial applications and buildings worldwide. By incorporating these drives into existing motor systems, such as pumps, fans, and compressors, power consumption can be typically reduced by up to 25%.
By expanding local manufacturing, ABB aims to provide Indian customers with quicker access to products, customizable options, and efficient serviceability. The increased production capacity also aims to support the growing demand from both domestic and global markets. Furthermore, this expansion will contribute to strengthening the local supplier ecosystem for ABB’s low voltage AC drives portfolio.
A.R. Madhusudan, President of Drive Products at ABB India, emphasized the company’s commitment to innovation and delivering sustainable solutions to the Indian market. He stated, “Drive products represent leading technology in energy efficiency, which is crucial for clean energy transitions. ABB drives manufactured in India will contribute to the country’s energy efficiency journey across various industries, buildings, and infrastructure.”
The new production line at the Peenya factory is designed with advanced features such as position, angle, and torque control, as well as a programmable fastening system. The facility is strategically optimized for productivity, safety, and effective space utilization. It is also equipped with an expanded precision testing facility to ensure high-quality products. Notably, the factory proudly boasts a diverse and skilled workforce, with over 50% representation of women technicians and engineers on the production line.
Besides its energy-saving potential, ABB drives have been deployed in critical national infrastructure projects, including the ventilation system for the Atal tunnel and the manufacturing of COVID-19 vaccines in pharmaceutical units. They have also been utilized in HVAC solutions for the prestigious Statue of Unity project and the hospitality industry across the country to optimize energy consumption.
The expansion of ABB’s manufacturing footprint aligns with global efforts to adopt energy-efficient technologies and work towards carbon neutrality. Currently, only approximately 23% of the world’s motors are equipped with drives. Therefore, this expansion will play a pivotal role in encouraging businesses and industries to embrace energy-efficient solutions and contribute to a more sustainable future.
With a legacy of over 130 years, ABB continues to drive industrial transformation through its innovative engineering and software solutions. With approximately 105,000 employees worldwide, the company remains dedicated to delivering cutting-edge technologies that optimize manufacturing, transportation, power, and operational processes, paving the way for a more resource-efficient future.
