Godrej & Boyce’s Appliances division, part of the Godrej Enterprises Group, has launched a specialized Food and Microbiology Lab aimed at enhancing consumer-focused innovation. The facility allows the company to study food behavior, preservation methods, and hygiene, ensuring that its appliances are designed to meet the unique needs of Indian consumers.
The lab is equipped to analyze various scientific parameters such as pH levels, ripening processes, humidity control, and microbial activity, as well as sensory factors like taste, texture, and appearance. This research helps improve the functionality of products.
Godrej, a trusted brand across India, continues to focus on insight-driven innovation. The Food and Microbiology Lab embodies this approach, blending scientific research with practical consumer needs to develop appliances suited for modern lifestyles, health-conscious choices, and changing dietary habits.
Managed by food scientists and microbiologists, the lab is led by the Head of Innovation for the Appliances Business and aims to create practical solutions for daily living. The lab supports appliance categories such as refrigerators and microwave ovens, with plans to expand its research to other sectors, including air conditioning, refrigeration, and washing machines.
Kamal Nandi, Business Head and Executive Vice President of the Appliances Business, Godrej Enterprises Group, commented, “Our Food and Microbiology Lab showcases our consumer-first philosophy, focusing on innovations that solve real problems and add value. By improving food preservation, indoor air quality, and other factors, we create appliances that truly enhance our consumers’ daily lives.”
Burzin Wadia, Head of Research & Development for the Appliances Business, added, “The lab was created to understand how food, air, and fabrics interact with our appliances. By examining parameters like food freshness and cloth quality, we can design products that offer meaningful benefits to our consumers, ensuring they seamlessly fit into their lives.”
Located in Godrej’s state-of-the-art R&D facility in Pirangut, Pune, the Food and Microbiology Lab is part of a ₹100 crore investment in research and development. The lab’s advanced infrastructure and NABL-accredited labs help accelerate product development, bringing innovative and consumer-centric appliances to market faster.
