Godavari Biorefineries Limited (BSE: 544279; NSE: GODAVARIB) has secured a United States patent for its invention titled “5-Hydroxy-1,4-Naphthalenedione for Use in the Treatment of Cancer”. The grant extends the company’s intellectual property protection for the compound following patent grants in India, China and Japan.
The patented compound belongs to a class of molecules being studied for their potential to inhibit cancer cells and cancer stem cells. According to the company, the research indicates potential applications against several cancer types, including breast and prostate cancer. Further research will be important to establish its therapeutic potential and suitability for clinical use.
The US patent expands Godavari Biorefineries’ intellectual property portfolio in life sciences and supports its ongoing research into compounds that may have applications in cancer treatment. The development forms part of the company’s wider efforts to explore scientific approaches to complex health challenges.
Samir Somaiya, Chairman and Managing Director of Godavari Biorefineries Limited, said the company’s research was guided by the objective of advancing human health and wellbeing. Referring to the Sanskrit phrase “सर्वे सन्तु निरामयाः”, meaning “Health for All”, he said the patent grant strengthened the company’s intellectual property position and supported its work on compounds with potential applications in cancer treatment.
Dr Sangeeta Srivastava, Executive Director of Godavari Biorefineries Limited, said developing new molecules for cancer treatment required sustained scientific research and a deeper understanding of the mechanisms involved in cancer cell growth. She described the patent as a step in the company’s research programme, particularly in the study of compounds targeting cancer cells and cancer stem cells. Dr Srivastava is one of four inventors named on the patent. The other inventors are Dr Sandip Gavade, Dr Prashant Kharkar and Dr Maithili Athavale.
The patent adds to Godavari Biorefineries’ research assets in life sciences and extends protection for its work into another major market. Patent protection provides legal rights over the covered invention in the relevant jurisdiction, while further development is needed to determine the compound’s eventual medical applications. The company said it would continue building its research capabilities and exploring compounds that could contribute to future approaches to cancer treatment.
