Godavari Biorefineries Limited has secured a patent from the Mexican Patent Office for its invention titled “Use of Compounds for Treating Viral Infections.” The grant follows similar patent approvals in Japan and China, extending the company’s intellectual property protection for its research into compounds that could be used in antiviral treatments.

The patent covers compounds that inhibit Vacuolar ATPase (V-ATPase), a cellular mechanism involved in the infection process of certain viruses. It also covers the use of these compounds in the manufacture of medicines for treating viral infections. The research examines the role of V-ATPase in viral infection and its potential as a target for developing antiviral approaches. The patent recognises a specific application of compounds that inhibit the activity of this cellular mechanism.

Samir Somaiya, Chairman and Managing Director of Godavari Biorefineries Limited, said the patent grant in Mexico marked another step in extending the company’s research protection across international markets. He said the approvals in Japan, China and Mexico reflected the geographical reach of the company’s intellectual property strategy and its efforts to develop life sciences applications through research and innovation.

Dr Sangeeta Srivastava, Executive Director of Godavari Biorefineries Limited, said the research had enabled the company to examine how compounds that inhibit V-ATPase activity could be applied in antiviral research. She added that the patent recognised a specific use of these compounds and represented an outcome of the company’s work in this field.

The patent names four inventors: Dr Sangeeta Srivastava, Dr Sandip Gavade, Dr Maithili Athavale and Dr Prashant Kharkar. The Mexican grant adds to the company’s intellectual property portfolio in antiviral compounds and expands protection for the invention beyond the Asian markets where similar patents have already been granted.

V-ATPase is involved in cellular processes that can influence how certain viruses infect cells. Research into this mechanism has examined its potential as a target for antiviral compounds. The patented work focuses on the use of specific compounds to inhibit the mechanism and their possible application in medicines for viral infections.

The patent grant does not, by itself, establish that the compounds are approved medicines or that their clinical effectiveness has been demonstrated. Further research and applicable regulatory processes would be required before any potential treatment could be made available for clinical use.

Godavari Biorefineries continues to develop its research portfolio across areas that include life sciences and speciality chemicals. The latest patent adds to its work on compounds with potential pharmaceutical applications and supports the company’s efforts to secure intellectual property rights in multiple markets.
