Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation (GMDC) has reached a major milestone by signing a Coal Mining Development and Production Agreement with the Ministry of Coal for the “Kudanali-Lubri” coal mine in Odisha. The event took place at Shastri Bhawan, New Delhi, on July 15, 2024.

Roopwant Singh, MD of GMDC, stated, “Adding the ‘Kudanali-Lubri’ coal mine is a big step for us. It boosts our resources and helps us operate more efficiently and cost-effectively in Odisha.” This is GMDC’s third commercial coal mine in Odisha, strengthening its role in the energy sector. The “Kudanali-Lubri” mine, located in the Angul district, is close to GMDC’s existing “Baitarni West” mine, allowing for better resource management.

The new mine has an estimated reserve of 396.10 million tons of thermal coal, increasing GMDC’s total coal reserves to approximately 2040 million tons. Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation (GMDC) is a prominent state-owned enterprise under the Government of Gujarat, India, focused on mining and mineral processing.

Established in 1963, GMDC has grown to become one of the leading mining companies in the country, with a significant presence in the lignite sector. It operates multiple lignite mines in regions such as Kutch, South Gujarat, and Bhavnagar.

Besides lignite, GMDC is involved in the extraction of various other minerals, contributing substantially to the industrial and energy sectors. Known for its commitment to sustainable mining practices and resource optimization, GMDC plays a crucial role in supporting Gujarat’s and India’s energy needs, while also emphasizing environmental responsibility and community development.
