Airbus Helicopters has delivered the first of up to 82 H145M helicopters to the German Armed Forces, less than a year after the contract signing. Named “LeichterKampfhubschrauber” (Light Combat Helicopter) or LKH, these aircraft are designed for multi-role capabilities, including training, reconnaissance, special forces missions, and light attack.
The first helicopter, dedicated to training, will operate from the German Army’s Bückeburg base. Delivery of the first light attack-configured H145M LKH is slated for 2025. Training for Bundeswehr pilots began in August 2024.
The December 2023 agreement, the largest-ever order for the H145M and its HForce weapon system, includes 62 confirmed helicopters with an option for 20 more, alongside seven years of support services. Of these, 57 will serve the German Army, and five will be assigned to the Luftwaffe’s special forces.
The H145M features advanced adaptability, transitioning between roles like light attack—with ballistic and guided weaponry—and special operations, equipped with fast-roping gear and external cargo systems. The fixed provisions for HForce allow Bundeswehr pilots to train on the same systems used in operational scenarios, enhancing efficiency and skill development.
Powered by SafranArriel 2E engines and equipped with Airbus’ Helionix avionics suite, the H145M boasts a 4-axis autopilot and low acoustic footprint, making it the quietest in its class. Already proven in global operations, the H145 family has amassed nearly 8 million flight hours. The Bundeswehr operates 24 H145 helicopters, and other military users include the US Army, Hungary, Thailand, and Belgium, among others.
