Giesecke+Devrient (G+D) and Murata have unveiled the world’s first connectivity module that integrates the SGP.32 Remote SIM Provisioning (RSP) specification and iSIM technology. This groundbreaking solution is based on Murata’s advanced Type 2GD Cat.M1/NB-IoT connectivity module, which adheres to the ETSI/3GPP Release 17 standard, and G+D’s secure SGP.32-compliant SIM operating system (OS).
The module is designed to support a range of IoT applications, including point-of-sale (POS) systems, asset tracking, healthcare, wearables, and smart devices for sectors like agriculture, smart cities, and home automation.
The growing use of IoT across industries such as transportation, logistics, agriculture, energy management, and manufacturing presents challenges, particularly in managing and provisioning IoT devices. The SGP.32 specification addresses these challenges by enabling a faster, more reliable IP-based protocol for remote SIM provisioning. Unlike the older SMS-based SGP.02, SGP.32 allows SIM profiles and settings to be sent over-the-air (OTA) via mobile networks, simplifying the activation and management of SIM profiles for IoT devices.
Murata’s compact Type 2GD module, featuring an integrated Universal Integrated Circuit Card (iUICC), supports SGP.32-compliant iSIM applications. By pre-flashing the desired SIM profile and G+D’s SIM OS during production, the process of provisioning IoT devices becomes more streamlined, eliminating the need for manual intervention. This also makes it easier to reconfigure SIM profiles remotely if needed, further simplifying the deployment and management of IoT devices while reducing costs.
“iSIM technology will be a game-changer for cellular IoT devices, reducing both size and complexity, particularly for applications like smart cities, medical devices, and wearables that depend on cellular networks,” said Hirokazu Nakae, General Manager of Murata’s Connectivity Module Products Department. He added, “This initiative makes the Type 2GD module the first to support the next generation of SGP.32-compliant iSIM devices.”
Bee Gek Lim, Global Head of Digital Connectivity & IoT Solutions at G+D, shared her enthusiasm about the collaboration: “We’re thrilled to partner with Murata to launch this groundbreaking iSIM module, which simplifies IoT device production and deployment. This solution offers manufacturers greater flexibility in managing SIM profiles, helping to drive IoT and iSIM innovation forward.”
End-to-End Solution
This new connectivity module from G+D and Murata represents the first integrated solution that supports both SGP.32 and iSIM technology. G+D’s SIM OS and management solution provide end-to-end remote provisioning capabilities for IoT devices, allowing customers to upload, manage, or update SIM profiles anywhere in the world. The G+D and Murata solution will be showcased at Electronica 2024 in Munich from November 12-15 at the Murata booth (Hall C4.179).
