GAIL (India) Ltd, a state-owned natural gas utility, has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Government of Karnataka to explore the development of renewable energy projects with a combined capacity of up to 1 gigawatt (GW) in the state. According to the agreement, the Karnataka government will assist GAIL in securing required approvals, registrations, clearances, and incentives from relevant departments in accordance with prevailing state regulations and policies. GAIL plans to implement the projects over a period of five years.
The financial terms of the initiative have not been disclosed. This initiative is aligned with GAIL’s objective of achieving net-zero carbon emissions from its operations by the year 2035. The development of renewable energy infrastructure forms a key component of this strategy.
The MoU was signed in Bengaluru on May 9, 2025, by S Selvakumar, Principal Secretary of the Karnataka Commerce & Industries Department, and Parivesh Chugh, Executive Director (Sustainable Development & Renewables), GAIL, in the presence of MB Patil, Minister for Large and Medium Industries and Infrastructure Development, and KJ George, Minister for Energy, Government of Karnataka.
In remarks delivered during the event, Minister Patil stated that the agreement reflects the state’s commitment to facilitating clean energy investments and supporting industrial expansion. Minister George noted that the partnership would contribute to Karnataka’s position as a green energy hub while promoting job creation and infrastructure development.
Established in 1984, GAIL operates an extensive pipeline network for transporting natural gas and is involved in the production of petrochemicals, along with the development of renewable energy solutions. As a key player in India’s natural gas industry, GAIL has contributed significantly to the nation’s energy security by providing sustainable, cost-effective solutions across various sectors. The company is also focused on expanding its global presence through strategic partnerships and projects, with an emphasis on innovation and sustainability in its operations.
