IPICOL and GAIL (India) Limited signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Wednesday to collaborate in the areas of Green Hydrogen, Green Ammonia, and Renewable Energy (Solar / Wind) for the manufacture of eco-friendly fuels in Odisha. The scope of the MoU includes, among other things, the preparation of a feasibility study for the proposed plants’ establishment. The MoU also underlines the importance of encouraging the production of environmentally friendly fuels in Odisha.
Green Hydrogen would assist the industry in reducing aggregate GHG emissions, thereby contributing to the overall goals of the Government of India’s INDC targets. Odisha, a power surplus state, is striving to expand its position in power, and these forthcoming projects will assist Odisha-based heavy industries in supplementing their growing power demand.
Asit Tripathy, Principal Secretary to the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Odisha, remarked at the MoU signing event in Bhubaneswar, “The entire globe is working to reduce carbon emissions, but it takes a lot of intent, support, and energy to accomplish the big transformation, and we are glad to assist the enterprise with sufficient land and reliable assistance.”
Hemant Sharma IAS, Principal Secretary to the Government of Odisha, Industries Department, lauded GAIL’s active interest in establishing a Green Hydrogen facility. He noted that Odisha now has a big pre-existing market for hydrogen and that this collaborative effort to manufacture green hydrogen in bulk will lower the cost of green hydrogen for industrial usage.
Speaking on the occasion, M V Iyer, Director (Business Development) of GAIL, stated, “We are focusing on the development of natural gas infrastructure and clean energy projects in Odisha and the rest of the country. GAIL is installing natural gas pipelines in Odisha, establishing a CGD project, and establishing a coal gasification facility in a joint venture.” The event was attended by key steel, aluminium, and chemical firms, as well as industry organisations such as FICCI, ICC, CII, and UCCI.
