FPT Industrial, a global leader in powertrain solutions for on- and off-road vehicles, as well as marine and power generation applications, has introduced its latest innovation, the R38 engine. Unveiled at the 2024 EIMA International Agricultural and Gardening Machinery Exhibition in Bologna, the R38 is set to enhance FPT’s already impressive range of industrial power units (IPUs) and power generation products.
The R38 is a 3.8-liter, turbocharged engine designed for unregulated markets, providing an affordable yet high-performance solution for various power generation and industrial applications. This new addition to FPT Industrial’s engine portfolio covers both power generation and industrial IPU needs, offering outputs of 50–60 kVA for power generation and 55–65 kW for industrial units.
With the capacity to handle a broad spectrum of uses, the R38 is ideally suited for backup power, mobile prime power, irrigation pumps, dewatering pumps, hydraulic power units, and air compressors. The R38 features a compact, four-cylinder G-Drive configuration, similar to FPT’s previous R24 engine, offering a fully integrated solution with a cooling pack and filters already installed.
It is powered by a robust mechanical injection system and is designed with user-friendly features such as single-side servicing, which simplifies maintenance and reduces downtime. The engine’s performance is adaptable with the ability to switch between 1,500 rpm and 1,800 rpm for the power generation version, providing flexibility for Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) in managing their stock requirements.
Francesca Rinaldi, Power Gen Portfolio and Product Management at FPT Industrial, commented on the significance of the new engine: “The R38 is set to play a critical role in our product range, especially in the unregulated markets. With its versatility and cost-effectiveness, we expect the R38 to become a dominant player across key sectors like generators, irrigation pumps, hydraulic power units, and dewatering systems.”
The R38 comes with outstanding technical specifications that promise reliability and durability across a range of applications. For power generation, the engine offers a standby power output of 55–66 kW and a prime power range of 50–66 kW, while the industrial version delivers 55–65 kW at 2,500 rpm and offers impressive torque from 290 Nm to 320 Nm.
It has a compression ratio of 17.5:1 and is equipped with direct mechanical injection for optimal fuel efficiency and performance. The engine also boasts a large 11.5-inch flywheel and is compatible with an SAE 3 flywheel housing, ensuring seamless integration into existing systems.
Both versions of the R38 meet European Union (EU) emission standards, which further strengthens FPT Industrial’s commitment to environmental responsibility and sustainable solutions. The engine’s robust design and efficient fuel management system will ensure minimal operational costs and maximum uptime, making it an attractive choice for OEMs and end-users alike.
The R38 is part of FPT Industrial’s ongoing efforts to enhance its comprehensive engine portfolio, which spans a range from 2.4 liters to 16 liters, with output capacities extending from 42 hp to over 1,000 hp. The company’s commitment to research and development has solidified its position as a global leader in industrial powertrains and solutions. FPT’s expansive presence, with over 8,000 employees across 10 production sites and 10 R&D centers worldwide, ensures strong customer support in nearly 100 countries.
As FPT Industrial continues to innovate in the power generation and industrial sectors, the R38 is poised to play a key role in shaping the future of unregulated applications, providing customers with reliable, cost-effective, and high-performance engine solutions.
