Flender has joined forces with renewable energy provider ECO2GROW to procure environmentally friendly electricity directly from wind and solar power facilities. Specifically, Flender gearboxes power the selected wind farm. Through multiple PPAs, the two companies have committed to obtaining green electricity from various renewable energy plants.
Headquartered in Bocholt, Germany, Flender is a global provider of mechanical and electrical drive systems, known for its exceptional performance, innovation, and reliability in drive components spanning over 120 years. The company offers a wide range of gear units, couplings, generators, and related services, focusing on key industries like wind power, cement, mining, oil & gas, power generation, water and wastewater, marine, conveyor, and crane technology.
Flender’s products and services integrate cutting-edge technology with unparalleled quality, consistently delivering optimal power transmission for many years. Globally, the company employs approximately 9,000 dedicated professionals. On the other hand, ECO2GROW provides medium-sized industrial firms direct access to eco-friendly electricity from solar and wind farms.
This partnership marks a significant milestone in Flender’s sustainability strategy, aligning with its ambition to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030. Flender CEO Andreas Evertz expressed satisfaction in the partnership with ECO2GROW, enabling them to directly purchase environmentally friendly power from the source.
Highlighting their market leadership in wind turbine drives through the Winergy brand, he emphasized the significance of locating a wind farm using their gearboxes, completing a sustainable cycle. Evertz noted their substantial reduction of CO2 emissions in their plants by 79% through various initiatives in recent years. He added that these PPAs mark a significant step towards their ultimate objective of achieving 100% sustainability.
Flender has the potential to reduce its carbon footprint by more than 7,500 tons of CO2 through the acquisition of renewable energy. This direct acquisition caters to about 12% of the electricity needs for its facilities in Germany. The wind farm supplying the electricity is situated south of Fulda in southern Germany, while the solar farm is positioned near Ludwigslust in the northern part of the country.
Paul Appel, the CEO of ECO2GROW, highlighted the significance of working together, stating that their focus was on PPAs with plants that have Flender gearboxes. He expressed pride in their substantial contribution to Flender’s sustainability strategy and the support for the energy transition. This partnership lays the groundwork for future collaborations that go beyond just buying green electricity directly.
