Alstom, a global leader in sustainable and intelligent transport solutions, has announced the start of operations for its next-generation Mark V SkyTrain vehicles in partnership with TransLink. The new automated five-car trains are now running on Vancouver’s Expo and Millennium Lines, marking a major upgrade in the city’s rapid transit network.

These cutting-edge vehicles are part of a broader modernization plan to enhance transit services and support future growth in the region. By the end of 2025, multiple Mark V trains will be operational, increasing both capacity and rider comfort.

Michael Keroullé, President of Alstom Americas, stated, “These Canadian-built trains offer best-in-class technology designed to improve reliability and performance while supporting Vancouver’s vision for smarter, more sustainable urban mobility. We’re proud to play a role in making public transit more accessible and efficient for the people of Vancouver.”

Kevin Quinn, CEO of TransLink, emphasized the impact of the new fleet: “SkyTrain is an integral part of life in Metro Vancouver. The Mark V introduces more space, enhanced accessibility, and advanced features that will elevate the transit experience for everyone. This fleet is a key investment in the future of our growing region.”

The new Mark V trains are the largest and most high-capacity on the SkyTrain system. Each five-car train accommodates up to 672 passengers—25% more than the four-car Mark III series. Designed with passenger experience in mind, the trains include interconnected carriages, modern interiors, ergonomic seating and standing layouts, advanced HVAC systems, large digital station displays, and artwork from Indigenous artists.

Alstom is producing and testing these vehicles entirely in Canada, with facilities in Kingston (Ontario), and La Pocatière and Saint-Bruno-de-Montarville (Quebec). At peak project activity, the effort employed over 280 professionals, with additional contributions from Canadian suppliers.

Alstom has been the primary rolling stock supplier for Vancouver’s SkyTrain system since its inception in 1985,” said David van der Wee, Vice President, Rolling Stock North America, Alstom. “The Mark V trains reflect our continued commitment to innovation and quality, delivering reliable and efficient solutions tailored to the unique needs of Canadian cities.” With a workforce of nearly 5,000 across the country, Alstom remains the only global rail manufacturer with production operations in Canada.
