Production has been indefinitely suspended at Tata Electronics’ facility in Tamil Nadu, which manufactures key components for Apple’s iPhones, following a weekend fire. Authorities are working to prevent further damage, with fire engines stationed at the site due to concerns about potential flare-ups during the removal of damaged structures.

“We have deployed fire engines as there is a risk of follow-up incidents or smoke as we clear the debris,” said district fire officer M. Velu, adding that the cause of the fire is still under investigation. The fire, which occurred early Saturday, left 10 workers with minor injuries and halted operations.

This incident comes as Apple aims to expand its supply chain in India, a key growth market, as part of its broader strategy to reduce reliance on China. Neither Apple nor Tata Electronics’ has provided detailed comments on the incident, though Tata confirmed its safety protocols were followed, ensuring employee safety. Rescue teams continued clearing debris on Monday, with inspections delayed due to the extent of the damage.

The plant manufactures critical iPhone components, including back panels. Another building on the same premises, which is expected to begin iPhone assembly later this year, may also be affected, though details remain unclear. District Collector K. M. Sarayu shared images of the fire’s aftermath, showing significant damage to the structure and machinery.

A senior health official, Shilpa Prabhakar Satish, who visited the site, described it as “heavily damaged,” with parts of the structure and roof collapsing, making entry difficult. Tata Electronics, part of the Tata Group, is one of Apple’s key suppliers in India, alongside Foxconn. The plant plays a crucial role in Apple’s efforts to expand its manufacturing footprint in the country.
