Eviden, part of the Atos Group, announced the launch of two new supercomputers at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) in Pune and the National Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF) in Noida. The systems were inaugurated by India’s Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi.

These supercomputers, powered by Eviden’s BullSequana XH technology, are designed to advance weather and climate research. They deliver a combined computational capacity of 21.91 Petaflops and utilize Eviden’s patented Direct Liquid Cooling technology for efficient cooling using warm water.

The IITM system, named ARKA, offers 11.77 Petaflops of processing power and 33 Petabytes of storage, while the NCMRWF system, named Arunika, provides 8.24 Petaflops with 24 Petabytes of storage. In addition, both installations feature a 1.9 Petaflop standalone system dedicated to Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning applications.

Eviden developed these advanced systems through collaborations with industry partners such as AMD, Nvidia, and DDN. Emmanuel Le Roux, Head of Big Data and Security at Eviden, expressed pride in partnering with the Ministry of Earth Sciences, emphasizing the company’s commitment to supporting India’s technological and scientific development. Dr. M. Ravichandran, Secretary of the Ministry of Earth Sciences, praised the collaboration, highlighting the importance of high-performance computing for precise weather forecasting.
