Etihad Cargo, the logistics and freight division of Etihad Airways, has announced a strategic partnership with LODD Autonomous, an Abu Dhabi–based leader in autonomous air mobility and logistics technology. The collaboration will explore the deployment of LODD’s next-generation ‘Hili’ hybrid VTOL (Vertical Take-Off and Landing) aircraft within Etihad Cargo’s UAE operations, marking a pivotal step toward redefining middle-mile delivery through automation, sustainability, and speed.
The partnership aims to integrate agile, short-range air vehicles into Etihad Cargo’s network to complement its existing fleet. The ‘Hili’ aircraft, capable of carrying up to 250 kilograms over 700 kilometres, eliminates the need for runways and traditional airport infrastructure, significantly reducing delivery times across the Emirates. The project will involve experimental operations to evaluate the aircraft’s safety, efficiency, and compatibility with current logistics systems, potentially transforming time-sensitive cargo transport such as pharmaceuticals, e-commerce shipments, and industrial components.
Stanislas Brun, Chief Cargo Officer at Etihad Airways, stated “Partnering with LODD Autonomous reflects our shared vision to pioneer smarter, cleaner, and faster air logistics solutions in the UAE. By leveraging autonomous and hybrid technologies, we aim to enhance connectivity, optimize operations, and deliver sustainable growth for our partners and customers.”
Rashid Al Manai, CEO of LODD Autonomous, added “The ‘Hili’ Hybrid VTOL UAV bridges critical gaps in middle-mile logistics, establishing direct air corridors between warehouses and logistics hubs. This innovation ensures reliability and speed for high-value shipments where delays can have major economic impacts.”
LODD Autonomous, headquartered in Abu Dhabi, specializes in AI-driven autonomous transport systems that simplify logistics operations while reducing emissions and costs. Its solutions serve a range of sectors including freight forwarding, healthcare, and e-commerce. The collaboration with Etihad Cargo underscores both companies’ commitment to building a sustainable logistics ecosystem that leverages advanced technology to boost efficiency and resilience.
This partnership represents a new era in air cargo innovation, positioning the UAE as a global testbed for autonomous middle-mile logistics. By combining Etihad Cargo’s extensive network with LODD’s autonomous expertise, the initiative is set to redefine how goods are moved across the country, supporting the region’s broader ambitions for smart mobility and sustainable transport infrastructure
