Energy Vault, a leader in large-scale, sustainable energy storage solutions, has secured a 14-year Long-Term Energy Service Agreement (LTESA) with AEMO Services for the Stoney Creek Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in New South Wales (NSW). The agreement follows the NSW Roadmap Tender Round 5 for Long Duration Storage.
The Stoney Creek BESS, in partnership with Enervest, a prominent Australian energy project developer, will feature a 1.0 GWh battery system and a 125MVA connection, positioning it as one of the largest 8-hour long-duration battery systems in the country. This project is a critical part of the ongoing efforts to enhance grid reliability and support Australia’s transition to renewable energy.
This development aligns with Energy Vault’s global strategy of owning and operating energy storage systems. The Stoney Creek project, along with other upcoming projects like the Calistoga Resiliency Center in California and Cross Trails BESS in Texas, represents a major step in fulfilling the company’s expansion goals.
Robert Piconi, CEO of Energy Vault, stated, “Stoney Creek serves as a key regional milestone, showcasing the execution of our ‘Own & Operate’ growth strategy. The Australian market is integral to our vision of building and maintaining energy storage systems, which will generate long-term value and profitability for our stakeholders.”
As one of the largest battery storage projects in NSW, Stoney Creek BESS will play a pivotal role in supporting grid stability and integrating renewable energy. It will balance energy from intermittent renewable sources, mitigate price volatility in wholesale markets, and reduce the need for renewable curtailment.
The project is on track to begin pre-construction and final design approvals, with regulatory permits and site security already in place. The successful LTESA award positions the project to make a significant impact on NSW’s energy infrastructure.
The partnership with Enervest is vital to the success of the project. Ross Warby, CEO of Enervest, emphasized, “Securing the LTESA for Stoney Creek marks a significant step in Australia’s energy transition. Collaborating with Energy Vault provided us with a proven partner in energy storage solutions, ensuring our bid was comprehensive and strong.”
Enervest and Energy Vault are also committed to working with Indigenous communities and local stakeholders to maximize the project’s long-term benefits to the region. Energy Vault specializes in utility-scale energy storage solutions using proprietary battery, gravity, and green hydrogen technologies. The company’s technology-agnostic software platform enables the integration and optimization of energy storage across various use cases, helping utilities and industrial users lower energy costs while maintaining system reliability.
Enervest is an Australian-owned energy developer focused on the design, construction, and operation of energy storage and generation assets. With over 15 years of experience, Enervest is leading the way in advancing Australia’s energy grid towards greater sustainability and resilience.
