Emerson (NYSE: EMR) has been selected by Lithium Americas Corp to supply a full suite of automation technologies and technical expertise for the Thacker Pass lithium development in northern Nevada. Emerson’s systems will support both the mine and processing facilities, helping establish a domestic source of lithium — a key material used in batteries for electric vehicles, renewable energy storage and data-center infrastructure.

With electric mobility and clean energy adoption rising, global lithium demand is projected to increase nearly fivefold by 2040. The United States holds the world’s third-largest known lithium resources, making projects like Thacker Pass vital for strengthening the nation’s energy independence and boosting economic growth.

Drawing on decades of experience in mining automation, Emerson will deliver its full technology portfolio, streamlined project-execution model and local engineering support to help ensure that Thacker Pass operates safely, reliably and efficiently. “Partnering with Emerson will support our mission to produce lithium from Thacker Pass in a safe and responsible way,” said Jonathan Evans, President and CEO of Lithium Americas. “Their automation systems will help North America lessen its reliance on imported critical minerals while creating long-term value for our stakeholders.”

Thacker Pass represents the world’s largest measured and indicated lithium resource and proven and probable reserve. Phase 1 is planned to produce up to 40,000 tonnes of battery-grade lithium carbonate each year — enough to supply materials for roughly 800,000 electric vehicles annually.

“Thacker Pass is a defining project for North America’s energy-transition ambitions,” said Ram Krishnan, Chief Operating Officer at Emerson. “Our focus is to support Lithium Americas in starting up safely and maintaining dependable operations that underpin future innovation.”

Emerson’s automation package includes intelligent field instruments, process-control platforms, isolation and control valves, and reliability technologies designed to enhance productivity, improve worker safety, minimize downtime and reduce environmental impact. The project approach also prioritizes cost-efficient construction and long-term operational value.

Caltrol, Emerson’s regional Impact Partner, will provide on-the-ground support through a local service center for valve and instrumentation repair, ensuring fast response, consistent engineering quality and emergency assistance when needed. Construction is already in progress, with Emerson and Lithium Americas collaborating to prepare the site for commissioning.
