Essar Energy Transition (EET) Hydrogen has finalized an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) agreement with ENKA to build its flagship low-carbon hydrogen production facility, HPP1, at the Stanlow Manufacturing Complex in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, UK. In October 2024, the UK government announced funding approval for HPP1, designating it as the nation’s first significant low-carbon hydrogen initiative within the HyNet Cluster.

HPP1 is set to produce 350 MW of low-carbon hydrogen while capturing approximately 600,000 tonnes of CO2 annually, equivalent to removing 250,000 cars from UK roads. EET Hydrogen called the EPC deal a “major milestone” for the HPP1 project, marking significant progress for the UK’s hydrogen sector and the HyNet Cluster.

The project underscores EET Hydrogen’s vision of developing 4 GW of low-carbon hydrogen capacity to support industrial decarbonisation in North West England, protect jobs, and boost economic growth. ENKA, a prominent engineering and construction company based in Istanbul, Turkey, is renowned for high-profile projects such as Hinkley Point Power Plant in Somerset and Shotton Mill Paper Factory in Flintshire.

Joe Seifert, CEO of EET Hydrogen, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration: “After a competitive tender process, we’re pleased to partner with ENKA, whose extensive expertise in delivering complex projects aligns perfectly with HPP1’s objectives. This partnership represents a critical step in our journey to establish ourselves as the leading producer of low-carbon hydrogen in the UK.”

Hakan Kozan, Executive Committee Member at ENKA, said, “We’re proud to join EET Hydrogen in this transformative project, which will play a pivotal role in advancing the UK’s hydrogen industry and reducing emissions globally. Our team is committed to delivering innovative solutions while supporting the HyNet Cluster’s mission of sustainability and economic development.”

HPP1 is set to become a cornerstone of the UK’s hydrogen transition, contributing to decarbonisation and strengthening the local economy. EET Hydrogen is an innovative company dedicated to advancing clean energy solutions through the development of hydrogen technologies.
