Intelligent power management company Eaton has secured a significant partnership with a prominent manufacturer of electrified vehicles to provide its cutting-edge ELocker differential system for a new plug-in electric hybrid (PHEV) SUV.
Unlike conventional PHEVs that rely solely on electric motors and internal combustion engines to power all drive wheels, this pioneering SUV model will utilize an electric motor to drive the rear wheels, complemented by either an electric motor or an optional internal combustion engine (ICE) powering the front wheels.
Mark Kramer, Business Unit Director of ePowertrain at Eaton’s Mobility Group, emphasized the unique challenges associated with designing the ELocker system for compatibility with fluid in an electric drive. He stated, “The ELocker had to be designed to be compatible with fluid in an electric drive, which is lighter and has a lower viscosity than axle and transmission oils.” Eaton’s engineering team rose to the occasion, making necessary adjustments to traditional ELocker designs by incorporating premium materials, coatings, and innovative designs.
The Eaton ELocker differential system represents a paradigm shift in vehicle control and traction. Featuring net-forged gears renowned for their strength and durability, the system is tailored for off-road and recreational driving. Its electronic controls offer driver-selectable operation, providing enhanced reliability compared to similar air-controlled products. With the simple press of a dash switch, the differential directs all available torque equally to the left and right wheels, ensuring maximum traction on challenging terrains.
