Dürr Systems AG has secured a major contract from FIB S.p.A., an Italian battery manufacturer and a subsidiary of Seri Industrial Group. This December order includes the supply of a giga-coating system with four anode and four cathode lines, along with calenders, slitters, and solvent recovery systems. The total value of the contract is in the high double-digit million-euro range.
This deal marks a key step in Dürr’s strategic focus on battery production, a path it began in 2018 after acquiring the U.S. company Megtec/Universal. Megtec contributed solutions for three critical steps in lithium-ion battery production, while Dürr also formed a partnership with Japanese manufacturer Techno Smart Corp. in 2020 and acquired calendering specialist Ingecal in 2023. Starting in January 2025, Dürr’s coating operations will be part of a new Lithium-Ion Battery business unit, and this order from FIB represents a major achievement for the newly formed unit.
FIB S.p.A. is making significant investments in a cutting-edge lithium-iron-phosphate battery production facility in Europe, using advanced Western technology. The equipment provided by Dürr includes the tandem coater, a proven system for applying coatings to both sides of battery foils, as well as a complete setup for drying, calendering, slitting, and solvent recovery. The plant’s planned capacity is 8 GWh per year.
The two-phase project, located near Naples, has a tight timeline, with installation scheduled to begin in the fall of 2025 and production to commence in 2026. Bernhard Bruhn, Vice President of the Global Business Unit for Lithium-Ion Batteries at Dürr, noted the rapid timeline, stating, “It’s impressive that we will start installing the first lines just 10 months after receiving the order.”
The Dürr Group has been directly represented in India since 1997, with Schenck RoTec establishing its presence as early as 1986. The group currently employs approximately 680 people in the country, offering a comprehensive portfolio of products, services, and solutions.
