DS Smith has chosen ABB to deliver a suite of advanced electrification, automation, and digital tools for a new stock preparation line at its Kemsley Paper Mill in Kent, UK. The initiative is part of a £50 million upgrade aimed at improving operational efficiency, lowering environmental impact, and supporting the long-term growth of the facility.
As part of the agreement, ABB will provide its System 800xA® distributed control platform, low-voltage motor control centers, drives, motors, safety equipment, and a performance monitoring solution designed to enhance asset reliability. These systems will be integrated into the mill’s existing infrastructure to create a unified operation that supports better decision-making and smoother performance.
Scheduled to launch in 2026, the new line will process recycled materials for the site’s PM3 paper machine, which manufactures sustainable packaging materials made entirely from recycled fiber. Once operational, the upgrade is expected to deliver significant reductions in water use, carbon output, and landfill waste, in support of DS Smith’s goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 46% across all scopes by 2030.
“ABB has been a key collaborator in our recent efforts to modernize and boost sustainability. Their approach aligns closely with our vision for this project,” said Adrian Clark, Electrical and Automation Development Manager at DS Smith Kemsley. “We’re aiming for a streamlined system across the mill that integrates well with our current setup, and we have confidence in ABB’s ability to deliver.”
Paul Clark, ABB Account Manager for the Pulp, Paper & Fiber sector, added: “This project demonstrates the value of combining automation, electrification, and digital insights into one solution. We’re proud to play a role in strengthening one of Europe’s leading recycled paper mills for the future.”
DS Smith’s ongoing investment at the Kemsley site marks a critical step in the company’s broader environmental and digital strategy, targeting improvements in both sustainability and productivity.
