Drive System Design (DSD), a renowned engineering consultancy now operating as a subsidiary of Hinduja Tech following its acquisition in December 2022, is gearing up to present its latest advancements in electrified propulsion technologies at the IAA Transportation 2024 event in Hannover, Germany.
Hinduja Tech, which has built a solid reputation for its innovative work across a wide range of vehicle platforms, including New Energy Vehicles (NEVs), is known for its emphasis on cost-efficient, high-performance product development. Its success is largely due to its approach, which focuses on frugal engineering and robust risk management processes.
Historically, DSD has played a pivotal role in the development and design of driveline and transmission systems for vehicles powered by internal combustion engines (ICE). Since 2010, the company has redirected much of its engineering expertise towards the growing demand for electrified propulsion systems, particularly for electric vehicles (EVs).
Over the years, DSD has earned the confidence of several major original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), Tier-1 suppliers, and prominent research institutions in diverse sectors including automotive, aerospace, defense, commercial vehicles, and off-highway industries. With technical centers in North America and the UK, complemented by commercial offices in key markets like South Korea, Japan, and India, DSD is well-positioned to deliver world-class propulsion system engineering services globally.
One of the key highlights of DSD’s presentation at IAA Transportation 2024 will be the unveiling of its PHEV-DCT (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle Dual-Clutch Transmission), developed for a European OEM. This innovative transmission system, which leverages a dual-clutch architecture, significantly enhances fuel efficiency while delivering a premium driving experience.
The performance of this system is further optimized by DSD’s proprietary Infinite Control Software platform, which ensures seamless integration and functionality. In line with the growing emphasis on sustainability, DSD has adopted powder metallurgy in several of its designs, contributing to a reduction in component costs by approximately 15% and a substantial decrease in the carbon footprint, cutting emissions by around 40%.
Additionally, DSD is actively exploring the use of soft magnetic compounds in motor designs, which offer improved performance and greater price stability, positioning the company as a leader in cost-effective and sustainable automotive solutions.
Another important project involves the testing and validation of e-Axle transmission lubrication. By utilizing both physical and virtual testing methods, DSD has managed to accelerate the design and validation process for a major automotive manufacturer, ensuring reliable performance across various driving conditions.
Moreover, DSD will showcase its innovative Open Platform Inverter (OPI) SiC, a versatile hardware and software solution for motor components and motor control intellectual property development. This platform is expected to significantly benefit various industries by offering flexibility and efficiency in electric motor design.
Pedro Zabala, DSD’s Head of Control Systems, will be on hand at the event to discuss the Open Platform Inverter and the Infinite Control Software platform, which has already found successful applications in sectors ranging from aerospace to heavy-duty vehicles.
Commenting on the impact of the acquisition, Shankar V., EMEA Regional Head of Hinduja Tech, remarked, “Since acquiring DSD in 2022, Hinduja Tech’s powertrain capabilities have been significantly enhanced. DSD’s deep expertise has strengthened our presence in the EMEA region, enabling us to play a key role in driving the transition toward cleaner and more sustainable transportation solutions.”
