India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has approved seven new projects for private companies to develop crucial military assets. These include technologies like underwater-launched drones and long-range remote-operated systems.
These projects, supported by the Defence Ministry’s Technology Development Fund, aim to enhance domestic defence manufacturing capabilities. One notable project focuses on developing underwater-launched drones for versatile military roles, enhancing intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance capabilities in marine environments.
Sagar Defence Engineering Pvt Ltd in Pune has been tasked with this project. Other initiatives include creating an ice detection sensor for aircraft, manufacturing radar signal processors, and developing long-range remote-operated vehicles for underwater object detection and neutralization.
The long-range remote-operated vehicles, managed by start-up IROV Technologies Pvt Ltd in Kochi, will serve dual purposes in military operations by safely managing threats underwater.
Additional projects include developing radar signal processors with active antenna arrays, an Indian regional navigation satellite system-based timing system, and an indigenous simulator for training pilots in realistic scenarios. Oxygen 2 Innovation Pvt Ltd in Noida will lead the development of the simulator toolkit.
DRDO aims to boost self-reliance in defence technologies through these projects, supporting industries, especially MSMEs and start-ups, in the aerospace and defence sectors. These efforts are expected to strengthen India’s military industrial capabilities significantly.
