The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully carried out the first flight-test of the Integrated Air Defence Weapon System (IADWS) off the coast of Odisha at 12:30 hrs on August 23, 2025. IADWS is an indigenous multi-layered air defence system that integrates Quick Reaction Surface to Air Missiles (QRSAM), Advanced Very Short Range Air Defence System (VSHORADS) missiles, and a high-power laser-based Directed Energy Weapon (DEW).

The system is operated through a Centralised Command and Control Centre developed by the Defence Research & Development Laboratory, with VSHORADS and DEW designed by Research Centre Imarat and the Centre for High Energy Systems and Sciences respectively. During the trial, three different aerial targets—including two high-speed unmanned aerial vehicles and a multi-copter drone—were simultaneously engaged and neutralized by QRSAM, VSHORADS, and the laser weapon system at varying ranges and altitudes. All components, including missile systems, detection and tracking units, communication links, and radars, functioned seamlessly.

Performance data was validated by range instruments at the Integrated Test Range, Chandipur. The test was witnessed by senior DRDO scientists and representatives of the Armed Forces. Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO, the Armed Forces, and the industry partners for the achievement. He emphasized that the test has demonstrated India’s layered air defence capability, strengthening the country’s ability to protect critical infrastructure from aerial threats.

Dr Samir V Kamat, Secretary, Department of Defence R&D and Chairman DRDO, also extended his congratulations to the teams involved in the programme. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is India’s premier agency dedicated to developing technology and equipment for the country’s defence forces. Established to enhance India’s self-reliance in defence technology, DRDO plays a pivotal role in research, design, and development across various domains such as aerospace, armaments, electronics, and combat vehicles.

Over the years, DRDO has spearheaded numerous projects aimed at modernizing and strengthening India’s defence capabilities. It collaborates closely with various sectors, including academia, industry, and international entities, to innovate and deliver cutting-edge solutions for the defence sector. DRDO’s contributions are instrumental in bolstering national security and advancing technological sovereignty in defence.
