Dormer Pramet is a global manufacturer that in the recent past has enhanced the support for the various die and mold applications by extending its range of indexable and solid round tools. The varied industry has a multitude of molding parts that have materials difficult to machine due to which there is a need of tools that can support high feeds and have large material removal rates.
The usual parts are micromolds, die casting molds, forging dies, and plastic injection molds and each of these need application-specific tooling. These encompass from heavy roughing to fine finishing. Dormer Pramet comes in contact with a wide range of die and mold manufacturers and companies generating large forgings to smaller parts such as mobile phone cases and molds for bottles.
On the basis of international standards, general materials are P20, H13, and D2 tool steel. P20 is a low-alloy, versatile material with high levels of toughness and moderate strength. Its general use is in plastic injection molds and die castings. Difficult-to-machine materials such as stainless steel, hardened tool steel, and prehardened steel are used for the workpieces.
H13 is a Chromium-Molybdenum versatile material used for applications where the maching process undergoes changes in temperature. It can show resistance to thermal fatigue and cracking tendency that takes place during different stages in the mold creation. D2 is high Carbon and Chromium tool steel with good abrasion and wear resistance. After heat treatment, it has a hardness of 63 HRC, which can be machined through proper tools and machining methods. The high Chromium results in medium corrosion resistance.
Due to variety in materials and sizes of workpieces and machining operations, the selection of apt cutting tools is critical. Dormer Pramet has many standard and special tools especially milling cutters to help
The industry is varied, and its users need efficient technical support and guidance for the selection of high-quality tooling. Dormer Pramet, for its Die and Mold segment, has a dedicated team for helping consumers with knowledge and expertise.
To expand the Die and Mold segment, Dormer Pramet has a holistic high feed milling assortment with recent additions. An example is the SBN10 cutter that is used for many milling operations ranging from roughing to finishing due to its unique pocket design. This has many design options and diameters from 16-42 millimeters. This cutter has BNGX10 inserts that enable a depth of cut up to 1 millimeter. An extremely economical and versatile operation is feasible due to the patented double-sided insert with four cutting edges.
Our die and mold range features both indexable and solid tooling. This means we can provide cutting tools for a wide range of operations. Our milling assortment provides the bulk of this offer, from heavy roughing through to fine finishing. The program includes copy milling, face milling, shoulder milling, and high feed milling cutters

The novel double-sided SNGX11 insert can be used for milling a cut up to a depth of 1.7 millimeters. In November 2019, this insert was added. It has a robust main cutting edge for a high level of durability and process security. The critical part is to machine corners inside a pocket. It has eight cutting edges and results in a very cost-effective solution with a square shape.
Copy milling is one more vital process. Dormer Pramet has a range of indexable milling tools, which consists of the SCN05C cutters, which have specific uses in the semi-finishing and finishing of cast irons, hardened steels, and steels. These cutters have a close pitch with more number of teeth that result in a minimum of 20 percent more productive as compared with standard pitch cutters. The vibration levels are decreased and optimization is possible for smooth cutting of pockets and corners.
Dormer Pramet has SRC10 small diameter cutters in several styles and diameters from 25 to 66 millimeters. They include coolant and an increased number of teeth with a pocket design for optimum support to inserts with eight facets.
Dormer Pramet has an indexable ball nose cutters (inclusive of ZP, XP, SRC, PPH) are one more alternative when roughing to semi-finishing a pocket. An example is the Multi side XP range, which is a high-performance profiling solution that comprises the patented SideLok clamping system that ensures a superior stability level particularly in the five-axis machining of complex surfaces.
From the perspective of round tools, Dormer Pramet has solid ball nose cutters that endorse contouring of complex surfaces and 3D profile milling. The hardened steels have S2xx and S5xx assortment, which are suitable for short lengths to extra-long lengths. They can decrease cutting forces and endorse higher feed due to their double radii. They have a reinforced design to raise stability and metal removal rates and an enlarged web to bear the radial forces that are created during the machining of hardened steels.
The solid carbide cutters have the S7xx program with a multi-material milling option. These cutters have their cutting edge with an extra margin to a more stable and safe process. This assortment is an optimum choice due to the varying diameters, lengths, flute designs, and coatings. It also has a good roughing profile and corner radii alternatives.
Specifically, the S766 and the S767 end mills have an unequal helix for minimization of cutting forces and enhancement of machining efficiency, an excellent surface finish, and a differential pitch for chatter-free machining. The unequal helix enables extremely high speeds because hit increases the impact of the differential pitch.
All the preceding cutting tools are evidence of the commitment of Dormer Pramet to the Die and Mold segment. Dormer has planned many additions for the future.
