Daimler India Commercial Vehicles (DICV) has successfully converted its Oragadam manufacturing facility near Chennai to operate entirely on renewable energy, eliminating 22,970 tons of carbon emissions annually. This achievement came ahead of the company’s original target for 2025.

The transition includes a combination of on-site solar power generation and off-site renewable energy sourcing. The facility’s solar plant, with 15,000 panels and a peak capacity of 4,300 kW, contributes 17% of the total energy required, helping to cut down 4,000 tons of carbon emissions each year.

Satyakam Arya, Managing Director of DICV, acknowledged the role of government policies, such as frameworks supporting green power purchases, in making the switch possible. The company has been steadily enhancing its renewable energy infrastructure since 2018.

This milestone comes as automakers around the world face increasing pressure to reduce their environmental impact. The Indian government aims for a 50% renewable energy mix by 2030, with major industrial players expected to spearhead the shift.

Daimler Truck AG, the parent company of DICV, is committed to achieving carbon-neutral vehicle production globally. The Oragadam plant, which manufactures commercial vehicles for both domestic and international markets, plays a key role in the company’s Asia operations.

DICV is also exploring additional energy-saving measures and renewable sources to further minimize its environmental footprint. The Oragadam facility produces BharatBenz trucks and buses as well as Mercedes-Benz coaches. The company measures its environmental impact using carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e), which accounts for the warming potential of all greenhouse gases, providing a comprehensive view of its sustainability efforts.

Daimler India Commercial Vehicles (DICV), a subsidiary of Daimler Truck AG, specializes in manufacturing and selling commercial vehicles in India. Headquartered in Oragadam, DICV offers a range of trucks and buses under the BharatBenz brand, known for their durability, efficiency, and safety. The company is committed to innovation, sustainability, and setting high industry standards.
