DCM Shriram has announced the commissioning of a new caustic soda flakes plant with a production capacity of 300 tonnes per day (TPD) at its chemicals facility in Jhagadia, located in Bharuch district, Gujarat. This addition brings the total caustic soda flakes production capacity at the Bharuch unit to 900 tonnes per day, making it one of the largest single-location caustic soda flakes production units in India, the company stated in a regulatory filing.
The newly commissioned plant mirrors the one launched in October last year, and both facilities are designed with flexi-fuel technology. This allows for the use of multiple fuel sources, enhancing sustainability and operational efficiency.
Caustic soda, also known as sodium hydroxide, is a highly versatile industrial chemical used across a range of sectors, including textiles, pulp and paper, alumina, soaps and detergents, petroleum refining, and water treatment. It is available in two forms: liquid (lye) and solid (flakes). The solid form, particularly caustic soda flakes, is favored for export due to easier long-distance transportation.
With an installed capacity of one million tonnes per annum, DCM Shriram is the second-largest producer of caustic soda in India.
