Cummins India Limited (CIL) has been honored with the prestigious Excellence in Environment Management award for the Manufacturing Sector at the CII-ITC Sustainability Awards 2022, recognizing its outstanding efforts in reducing environmental impact. The award was presented by Nitin Gadkari, Hon’ble Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Government of India, highlighting CIL’s commitment to sustainability and its innovative approaches in addressing climate change.
The award ceremony took place on May 10, 2023, in Delhi, where Nitin Gadkari, Hon’ble Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Government of India, presented the award to Shirish Bhide, Operations Leader – Power Systems Supply Chain, Cummins India, and Rajendra Kulkarni, Plant Head – Kothrud Engine Plant, Cummins India. Distinguished business and industry leaders, subject matter experts, and policymakers graced the event.
Expressing gratitude for the award, Shubhankar Chatterji, Chief Supply Chain Officer, Cummins India, highlighted the significance of the CII-ITC Sustainability Awards and voiced pride in receiving the esteemed Excellence in Environment Management award. Chatterji emphasized that the award symbolizes Cummins India’s dedication to its PLANET 2050 and Destination Zero objectives. The company strives to reduce its carbon footprint, combat climate change, and promote sustainability by implementing initiatives to minimize greenhouse gas emissions, volatile organic compound emissions, water consumption, and waste generation across all Cummins India facilities. Chatterji also extended his appreciation to the employees who actively contribute to the company’s environmental stewardship, working towards a prosperous and sustainable future.

Seema Arora, Deputy Director General of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), commended Cummins India for its commitment to sustainability goals and its efforts in creating a positive environmental impact. Arora emphasized that excellence in sustainability is an ongoing journey of improvement in processes and outcomes, and Cummins India’s initiatives serve as an example of sustainable development and growth.
Cummins India has established a robust Environment Management System and operational controls, ensuring that all manufacturing sites are ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 certified. The company employs a structured aspect impact assessment to identify environmental risks, which are effectively managed through a risk hierarchy control framework. Internal environmental impact management is prioritized, encompassing pollution prevention, stormwater management, fluid and water management, wastewater management, and waste management.
Employees play a crucial role in driving sustainability initiatives at Cummins India. The company’s PLANET 2050 influencer program encourages employee participation in environmental projects. Additionally, Cummins India provides dedicated Environment Champion Training to cultivate environmental leaders from within the organization. The company celebrates Environment Month annually in June to raise awareness of creating a safer, greener, and cleaner environment. Regular environment campaigns and the implementation of best practices are closely monitored, with senior leadership conducting monthly reviews and capital mapping.
