Crompton Greaves Consumer Electricals Ltd. has launched the second batch of its Saksham program, an innovative initiative that provides women from underserved backgrounds with skills to enter the electrical industry.

Developed in partnership with Tata Strive, this program aims to break gender barriers in STEM fields by equipping women with hands-on training and certifications needed to excel in technical roles. Building on the success of the initial batch, Saksham addresses the gender imbalance in the electrical sector by offering a pathway for women to gain sustainable careers in this traditionally male-dominated field.

Historically, the Indian electrical industry has seen a gender gap due to social stereotypes, limited training, and cultural norms that discourage women’s participation in technical fields. Recognizing these challenges, Crompton and Tata Strive have collaborated to launch Saksham in Maharashtra, training young women from rural communities in Ahmednagar and Nashik as skilled assistant electricians. The Saksham program goes beyond technical training by:

  • Empowering women: Providing the confidence and skills for women to enter non-traditional career paths, fostering economic independence and new opportunities.
  • Challenging social norms: The program promotes inclusivity in the workforce by offering structured training and placement options.
  • Creating role models: Many graduates are first-generation learners who inspire other women to pursue careers in technical fields.

Commenting on this initiative, Crompton’s MD & CEO, Promeet Ghosh, stated, “Diversity is essential to our success. The Saksham program not only opens doors to the electrical industry for these young women but also inspires future generations to consider careers in this sector. We’re proud to support their journey and look forward to the positive impact these graduates will have.”

Ghosh emphasized that Saksham aligns with Crompton’s commitment to fostering a more inclusive society. This three-month, residential program, certified by the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) and Tata Strive, began in January 2024 and combines classroom learning with practical training. Additionally, Tata Strive guarantees a 70% placement rate for graduates, with neighboring industries showing interest in hiring these trained professionals.

Crompton has also partnered with Mahila Arthik Vikas Mahamandal (MAVIM) to ensure long-term support for program graduates, providing continued guidance throughout their first year of employment. Through this initiative, Crompton leverages its expertise to empower women with world-class training, supporting their successful entry into the electrical workforce.
