The Bangalore plant of Continental, a German technology company, has been recognized for its sustainable manufacturing practices, earning the prestigious Green Plant Label (GPL) gold certification, making it the second location after the Regensburg plant among 58 Automotive plants globally in line with Continental’s carbon neutrality mission.

Continental Automotive India’s sustainable manufacturing practices have been recognized with a prestigious Green Plant Label (GPL) certification at the Gold level for their Bangalore plant. This certification evaluates energy efficiency, waste and recycling management, water consumption, emission control, and innovation in research and development.

Continental has been on a mission to achieve 100% carbon neutrality across its entire value chain by 2050, and the company has identified four focus areas for achieving its sustainability goals. The Bangalore plant is a fine example and a step in the right direction towards realizing Continental’s vision to achieve carbon neutrality.

The plant follows Industry 4.0 practices in all areas, enabling smart manufacturing and data-driven operational management. Technologies such as Collaborative Robots, Augmented Reality, Artificial Intelligence, automated replenishment systems, and Big Data applications are implemented on the shop floor. These technologies are being used to assist in operational efficiency, maintaining a high level of precision, and ensuring transparency.

Phanindra Karody, Head of the Bangalore Plant, Continental Automotive India, expressed his excitement about the achievement, saying, “The gold certification in Green Plant Label is a remarkable feat for the Bangalore plant, and we were steadfast in our efforts to achieve this. For us, sustainability is at the core of our business and manufacturing practices.”

Continental’s circular economy plan aims to create a responsible value chain where each stakeholder creates ecological, economic, and social value for society. The company is committed to making all its production processes carbon-neutral by 2040 by reimagining the entire global value chain of its products. With its innovative practices and commitment to sustainability, Continental is confident that it will achieve its goals of carbon neutrality and a circular economy.

Continental’s digitization and automation of various processes have enabled the Bangalore plant to become the largest electronics manufacturing plant of Continental in India and a symbol of a smart factory. The Bangalore plant’s success in achieving a Gold level of certification for sustainable manufacturing practices is an inspiring example of how Industry 4.0 practices can help drive a company’s sustainability goals forward.
