At CES 2025 in Las Vegas, Continental unveiled a demo vehicle designed to highlight advanced interaction technologies for future cars. The “Intelligent Vehicle Experience Car” integrates biometric features to create a more intuitive and secure relationship between users and their vehicles.

The vehicle incorporates advanced facial recognition and movement analysis to identify users before they even step inside. These technologies enable actions such as unlocking doors or opening the tailgate automatically. It also has the ability to detect unauthorized individuals nearby, keeping the doors locked and activating warnings to prevent potential threats.

This demonstration vehicle highlights the evolution of software-driven cars, where software plays a central role in managing and controlling various functions. Continental is actively exploring biometric technology as a key element for future vehicle designs, aiming to deliver a user experience that is more secure, intuitive, and personalized.

Dr Claudio Longo, Continental’s Head of Research and Advanced Engineering, underlined the transformative potential of biometrics in reshaping mobility, while Jean-François Tarabbia, Head of Architecture and Network Solutions, likened the technology to enhancing vehicles into smarter, more interactive devices.

The prototype showcases features that may soon become standard, including the ability to sense when someone is approaching, verify their identity through facial recognition, and interpret gestures, such as waving near a door handle. It can even open the trunk with just a glance from an authorized user, though current models also support triggering by a small kick near the rear bumper.

The system integrates artificial intelligence with existing vehicle sensors, such as 360-degree cameras and ultra-wideband radar, to ensure precise detection and identification. Designed to enhance both convenience and security, the system also addresses energy efficiency and data protection concerns.

Continental plans to expand these intelligent features through secure over-the-air updates, paving the way for continuous advancements in software-controlled vehicle capabilities. Continental plans to integrate such intelligent features into future vehicles, using secure over-the-air updates to continuously expand functionality, paving the way for cars that adapt to their users seamlessly.
