At the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas (January 7–10, 2025), Continental will debut its groundbreaking Invisible Biometrics Sensing Display, which has been recognized as a CES Innovation Award Honoree. This advanced technology uses a concealed camera and laser projector behind an OLED display to monitor passengers’ vital parameters and enhance safety and comfort features.
The display integrates 3D distance mapping, optimizing airbag deployment and ensuring proper seatbelt fastening. Developed in collaboration with trinamiX, a BASF subsidiary specializing in biometric solutions, the system also monitors heart rate and other vital signs without physical contact. This capability helps detect stress or potential medical emergencies, enabling the vehicle’s safety features to respond proactively.
“Our innovative solutions seamlessly combine advanced technologies into displays, enhancing functionality and delivering added value for users,” said Pavel Prouza, Head of the User Experience business area at Continental.
The Invisible Biometrics Sensing Display earned the CES Innovation Award in the “Vehicle Tech and Advanced Mobility” category. Its design, which integrates sensors invisibly behind the screen, unlocks creative possibilities for interior designers and improves user acceptance. The system captures vital driver and passenger data while remaining hidden, ensuring an intuitive and streamlined cabin experience.
A near-infrared camera and eye-safe laser dot projector, embedded behind a high-resolution OLED screen, operate by capturing light reflections in the invisible spectrum. These are analyzed using AI-powered algorithms to monitor vital signs and measure passenger proximity to the dashboard. The technology can also classify materials to verify seatbelt use, enhancing safety.
“This solution uniquely combines vital sign monitoring and passenger data analysis within a single module, offering unparalleled functionality for car interiors,” said Wilfried Hermes, Director of Consumer Electronics for North America and Europe at trinamiX.
Continental will present its latest innovations at a private exhibit in Central Plaza, opposite the Las Vegas Convention Center, from January 7–10. The display is part of the company’s suite of mobility solutions spanning on-road and cloud-based technologies. A media event will be held by invitation on January 7.
