Continental has been honored by Time magazine and Statista as one of the 500 most sustainable companies globally for 2024. This recognition stems from a specialized methodology developed by these organizations, which assessed 5,000 companies based on their sustainability strategies and reporting. The evaluation included over 20 key indicators, such as emissions intensity, energy consumption, and the share of renewable energy used.
With a score of 61.39 out of 100, Continental ranks 265th overall and is among the top 10 companies in the automotive sector. Notably, three tire manufacturers made it to the list, with Continental securing the second spot.
Commitment to Sustainability Across the Value Chain
Continental Tires is committed to innovative technologies and sustainable practices throughout its entire value chain, from sourcing sustainable materials to design, production, and the recycling of end-of-life tires. The company has demonstrated exceptional performance across all categories evaluated by Time and Statista.
All Continental tire production facilities are implementing both individual and company-wide initiatives to achieve climate-neutral production by 2040. A significant milestone was reached this year at the Lousado plant in Portugal, where tires are produced with a carbon-neutral footprint, thanks to steam generated by an electrically powered boiler. This steam is produced using solar energy from the company’s facilities and renewable energy from the grid.
Energy Efficiency and Emission Reductions
Continental Tires has implemented 160 energy-saving projects, resulting in a reduction of approximately 150 gigawatt-hours in annual energy consumption for 2023. This amount of energy is equivalent to the annual consumption of about 12,500 single-family homes, achieved through increased reliance on renewable energy and enhanced thermal insulation. Additionally, the company successfully reduced its CO2 emissions by 31,000 tons in 2023.
Future Goals for Sustainable Materials
Continental aims to use over 40% renewable and recycled materials in its tires by 2030, with the ultimate objective of becoming fully carbon-neutral by 2050. By that time, the company envisions that all its tires will be manufactured entirely from sustainable materials.
