Cochin Shipyard Secures International Order

Wind-turbine-Vessel

Cochin Shipyard Limited has secured an international order from a European client to construct hybrid Service Operation Vessels (SOVs) for the offshore wind renewables market. This adds to CSL’s impressive portfolio, reflecting the global shift towards sustainable and green energy solutions.

Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), based in Kochi, India, is one of the largest shipbuilding and maintenance facility in the country. It delivers a wide array of vessels, including tankers, bulk carriers, and offshore support vessels. The company’s expertise extends to ship repair, ship design, and construction of specialized offshore structures.

The hybrid SOVs, designed by VARD in Norway, serve as the backbone of the growing renewables sector. These vessels, tailored for the service, maintenance, and operational requirements of the offshore wind industry, boast advanced features.

They are equipped with a fully electric cycloidal propulsion system, a 3D motion-compensated gangway system (walk-to-work), and a 3D crane as mission equipment. Classified with DNV ‘Clean Design’ and the latest ‘Cyber Secure’ notations, these vessels employ a hybrid electric propulsion system powered by three 1300 ekW diesel generator sets and a sizable lithium battery pack, ensuring substantial emission reduction.

Designed to accommodate 54 technicians and crew with DNV comfort ratings, the vessels also incorporate an in-built Dynamic Positioning System. CSL’s extensive experience in the international shipbuilding arena, spanning over two decades and involving the delivery of over 50 high-end vessels to countries like the USA, Germany, Netherlands, Norway, Denmark, and the Middle East, positions the company as a key player in the offshore support vessel sector.

The recent construction and delivery of Zero Emission Autonomous Cargo Ferries to a Norwegian client and the ongoing progress in building a series of eight Multi-Purpose Vessels for a German client further underscore CSL’s capabilities.

Apart from its contributions to the commercial sector, CSL remains active in defense shipbuilding, recently delivering India’s First Indigenous Aircraft Carrier to the Indian Navy and securing more orders for Anti-Submarine Warfare Corvettes and New Generation Missile Vessels.

Concurrently, CSL is working on constructing two Commissioning Service Operation Vessels (CSOVs) for another European client. This latest SOV contract solidifies CSL’s presence in the high-end and niche global renewable energy segment, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable solutions.
